Code of Conduct

Codes of Conduct and Behaviour for all Club Members
The club is affiliated to the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) and we are expected to conduct our activities within its rules. These rules include the ASA Code of Conduct, Code of Ethics and an Equity Policy. The club has adopted the following “General Code of Behaviour” which we expect all members to follow. Please read each category carefully so you know what is expected of you as a member of our club. The Code will be provided to all new members. There are various Codes of Conduct in respect of swimmers, coaches, teachers, poolside staff parents and volunteers and we expect all members to sign up for the Code that affects them. These codes apply to swimming lessons, training sessions, Galas and Open Meets.


General Code of Behaviour for All Members of the Club:
As a member of Westbury Amateur Swimming Club, your conduct is expected to meet the following requirements with respect to any club activity:

  • Recognise swimmers’ rights to consult with other coaches and experts in the field.mmittee.
  • Maintain a high standard of personal behaviour at all times.
  • Respect the rights, dignity and worth of others, regardless of their gender, abilities, cultural
    background or religion.
  • Be fair, considerate and honest in all dealings with others.
  • Be professional in and accept responsibility for your actions.
  • Be aware of and maintain the standards, rules, regulations and policies of the sport and
    operate within the rules of the sport including national and international guidelines, which
    govern the sport.
  • Do not use your involvement with the club to promote your own beliefs, behaviours or
    practices where these are inconsistent with those of the club.
  • Refrain from any acts of physical or verbal aggression towards or harassment of others.
  • Refrain from any behaviour that may bring the club into disrepute.

Swimmers Code of Behaviour

As a swimmer/member of the club, you are expected to meet the following requirements in regard to your conduct during any activity held or sanctioned by the club:

Respecting Others:

  • Respect the rights, dignity and worth of fellow swimmers, coaches, officials and
    spectators.
  • Respect the talent, potential and development of fellow swimmers and competitors.
  • Abide by the rules and respect the decision of the official, making all appeals through the
    formal process and respecting the final decision.
  • Do not commit or tolerate acts of aggression.

Personal Conduct:

  • Be honest in your attitude and preparation to training. Work hard for yourself and your team
    and cooperate with coaches and staff as they prepare you for competition.
  • Be open and honest with your coach regarding any illness or injury that affects your ability to
    train fully.
  • Arrive in advance of training session start times and warm up in advance of the session
    commencing.
  • Listen and pay attention to your coach. Training should be fun, but it is not play.
  • Conduct yourself in a considerate manner relating to language and temper. Your behaviour
    must always be appropriate and socially acceptable. Sanctions that will be applied where
    behaviour is not acceptable are detailed in the Club’s Code of Conduct.
  • Take pride in your appearance with Team kit being worn as directed by the team managers.
  • Alcohol and smoking is totally forbidden for athletes underage as defined by law.
  • The use of performance enhancing drugs and illegal substances is totally forbidden. It is your
    responsibility to check that any medication you take does not contain a banned substance
    under A.S.A. law.


Coaches and Poolside Staff Code of Behaviour

As a member of the coaching or poolside staff, your conduct must meet the following requirements during any club activity:


Personal Conduct:

  • You are expected to maintain a professional appearance on the poolside and be conscious of
    the example this sets to the swimmers and the image this presents of the club.
  • Alcohol and smoking is not acceptable when in charge of or taking responsibility for the welfare
    of swimmers.
  • When dealing with persons under 18 years of age, avoid unaccompanied and unobserved
    activities with such persons and demonstrate a high degree of individual responsibility as your
    words and actions are an example.


Relationship with Swimmers:

  • Treat all swimmers fairly within the context of their sporting activities, regardless of gender,
    race, place of origin, athletic potential, colour, sexual orientation, religion, political beliefs,
    socio-economic status and other conditions.
  • Be sensitive when providing feedback to swimmers and other participants. Avoid overly
    negative feedback. Avoid excessive verbal targeting, shouting or exercise used as punishment.
  • Where possible, involve the swimmers in decisions that a􀆯ect them.
  • Recognise the power that you, as a coach, develop with your swimmers in the coaching
    relationship and avoid any conduct with swimmers that could be construed as compromising.


Personal Commitment:

  • When dealing with young swimmers, we will, at all times, work with West Wilts Force 5 and our local network to ensure we get the best out of our swimmers
  • Ensure that the tasks and/or training set are suitable for age, experience, ability, and physical
    and psychological conditions of the swimmers.
  • Encourage swimmers to respect one another and to expect respect for their worth as
    individuals regardless of their level of play.
  • Encourage and facilitate swimmers independence and responsibility for their own behaviour,
    performance, decisions and actions.
